Standing Still Has Its Own Season

Sometimes we need a push to get on with God’s work. Knowing what needs to be done and actually doing it are two different things.

Granted, seeing someone ascend into the clouds had to have been better than any superhero movie we’ve ever seen. Not only did Jesus die on the cross, but He was also resurrected in a physical body they could touch and see. Now, in that same physical body, He was ascending into the clouds.

Is there more to see?

Is He coming right back?

Whoa, can I do that too?

Is this a practice session?

Let’s wait and see, because we can’t really believe He’s leaving us.

All of the above may have been running through the disciples’ minds, and they were stagnant—just standing there, gazing into the space where He had been.

The appearance of the angels, messengers from God, cuts into their frozen gaze, reassuring them of Jesus’ promise of the Holy Spirit and the hope that He’ll be with us physically once again.

When change happens, I—we—tend to be slow to adapt to it. I have to realize it and make a conscious choice to keep moving and not stay mired in what was.

This also applies to our spiritual lives. I like to stay with what I understand and know works, but faith isn’t about what I understand or know. It’s about absolute trust in the One who’s trustworthy.

So then, I must move!
