About the Movie

He Calls Me Daughter is a deeply personal and emotionally powerful film that explores what it means to carry a father wound and what it takes to heal from it. Through raw storytelling and spiritual insight, the film reveals how unmet needs from an earthly father can shape identity, relationships, and self-worth. But it also offers a path forward. One rooted in the love of a Heavenly Father who restores, redeems, and redefines what it means to be a daughter. This is not just a story about pain. It is a story about healing, forgiveness, and identity.

Your story doesn’t end with your father’s failures.  Father Wounds can be healed.

There are some films you choose to watch… and then there are the ones that feel like they choose you.

He Calls Me Daughter is one of those.

If I’m being honest, had I known exactly what this documentary would cover, I’m not sure I would have chosen to watch it right now. But after seeing it, I can say this without hesitation: it’s a film I wish I had seen in my late twenties.

This documentary centers on a deeply personal and often unspoken struggle—how do you see God as Father when your experience with your earthly father was painful, inconsistent, or even traumatic?

That question hit home for me.

I had no problem connecting with Jesus or the Holy Spirit. But “Father”? That was complicated.

Like many women, my experiences growing up shaped how I viewed men—and ultimately, how I viewed God. I was an unwilling witness to domestic abuse and a survivor of sexual abuse and date rape. Those experiences left me with a deep mistrust and a lingering question for God: Where were You? Why didn’t You come when I needed You?

This film doesn’t shy away from those hard questions. Instead, it brings language and clarity to what many call the father wound—the deep impact a broken or absent father relationship can have on a daughter’s identity, relationships, and faith.

When Chonda Pierce shared her story—especially the moment she described walking on eggshells and being punished unfairly—I felt that. That kind of environment shapes you in ways that don’t just disappear with time. To this day, if I walk into a room and the atmosphere is heavy, I tense up right away. But I thank God for His healing and helping me to overcome old patterns.

And then there was Priscilla.

What stood out to me most was her honesty. She didn’t excuse her past or try to soften it—she simply told the truth about where she had been and how God met her there. Her story is a powerful reminder that there is no place too broken or too far gone for God to reach.

One of the strongest messages in this documentary is this: God is the perfect Father. Even when earthly fathers fail, His love remains constant, personal, and healing. He steps into the gaps and provides what was missing.

Another powerful thread is healing. This isn’t a quick fix or a surface-level solution. Healing the father wound is a process—one that often involves facing pain, learning to forgive, and allowing God to redefine how you see yourself.

And forgiveness? That’s not easy. But this film reminds us that forgiveness is made possible through God, who enables true release and restoration. Forgiveness is also a gift you give yourself.

At its core, this documentary also speaks to identity. You are not defined by what you lacked or what you experienced. You are defined by who calls you His.

While watching, I was also reminded that God doesn’t just heal us spiritually—He often places people in our lives to help restore what was broken.

For me, that came through my brother-in-law.He Calls Me Daugher, endorsement. Healing Father Wounds

He was the first man I ever saw cry—really cry. Not brushing it off or pretending something was in his eye, but openly and honestly bawling. He has such a compassionate heart and such a deep understanding of women that you can have highly personal conversations with him and feel the caring, he hurts when you hurt and cries when you cry kind of guy. With him I feel completely safe, heard, and respected. That mattered more to me than I realized at the time. It helped soften my heart and showed me that not all men are the same.

There are so many wounded daughters walking around carrying pain that influences their choices—especially in relationships. So often, we look for someone to fill a space that only God was meant to occupy.

That’s why this film matters.

It’s also worth noting that this documentary serves as a message to fathers. The role of a father is not small—it is foundational. Fathers have a profound impact on their daughters’ sense of worth, security, and identity. This film is both a wake-up call and an invitation to show up, love deeply, and lead well.

I continue to appreciate the quality storytelling from Angel Studios and the kind of impactful, faith-centered content often associated with creators like the Kendrick Brothers.

If I had one small critique, it would be this: I would have loved to see a few dramatized scenes woven into the documentary. Not because the storytelling wasn’t effective, but because sometimes seeing a moment can make it easier to process than simply hearing it—especially with such heavy subject matter.

This is a documentary worth watching.

If this message resonates with you—or if any part of your story feels reflected in it—I encourage you to take the next step and watch He Calls Me Daughter on Angel. It’s a powerful journey of healing, identity, and restoration that may meet you in ways you don’t expect.

And if you’re passionate about seeing more stories like this brought to life, you might consider joining the Angel Guild. It’s a meaningful way to support films that center hope, healing, and truth—and help ensure these kinds of conversations continue reaching the people who need them most.
