Are We Really Living in the Present?Daily Reflections — October 1

What Does Living In the Present Look Like?

Many times, we want to know the future.

We watch shows like Star Trek—of which I’m a fan—Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, Quantum Leap, because we like to indulge in the picture drawn by someone else’s mind of what the future will hold, or what it could hold.

Will there be flying cars and teleportation?

Maybe.

But what is that question doing for us now?

Or for the lost right now?

The disciples were still wondering if Jesus was going to restore the Kingdom to Israel.

“Lord, are You restoring the Kingdom to Israel at this time?”

And Jesus’ response, rightfully so, was basically, It’s not for you to know what God has the authority to divulge at this time.

Because here He is, telling them and showing them. He’s brought the Kingdom of God and the restoration of the Kingdom right before their eyes, and they still don’t really see it.

And that has been God’s way of revealing things throughout Scripture. Parables within parables. People understand at their own level, and revelation comes at the level of maturation.

They weren’t mature enough at that point to assimilate everything they were asking about.

So Jesus tells them He’s going to send the Holy Spirit.

Then they’ll get it.

Because the Holy Spirit will lead and guide them into all truth.

And with that, they’ll have what they need to go to those who are near to them first, then the people further out, and further out, and further out, until they reach the world by word of mouth.

Can you imagine, 2,000 years ago, how much walking and talking that took?

And yet we’re here.

With all the technology we have, we still haven’t reached the world.

Shame on us.

We have technology they never had.

We have ways of reaching people they couldn’t have imagined.

And maybe we spend too much time wondering what the future will hold instead of paying attention to what Jesus has already told us to do right now.

He didn’t give them the answer they wanted about the future.

He gave them the Holy Spirit and told them what to do with the present.
